THE STORY OF THE STRIP

Three names. One stretch of Montego Bay.

Bottom Road, Gloucester Avenue, Jimmy Cliff Boulevard: the names are a way into the story.

VISIT HIP STRIP · 4 MIN READ

Ask for Bottom Road. Look for Gloucester Avenue on an older address. See Jimmy Cliff Boulevard on a newer sign. Before you have chosen a restaurant, Montego Bay has given you three ways into the same conversation.

The Hip Strip is the visitor name that ties this stretch together. For this guide, we follow the boulevard from its Kent Avenue junction towards Harmony Beach Park, keeping the businesses on the road distinct from places a short journey beyond it. That matters when you are choosing somewhere to go: “near the Hip Strip” is not always the same as being on it.

A beach with a long memory

One part of the story begins at Doctor’s Cave. The bathing club traces its founding to 1906, when Dr Alexander James McCatty donated his beach property. Its own history explains that the name came from the doctors who used the beach and a cave through which they entered. The cave was destroyed in a hurricane in 1932; the name remained.

Those are more than useful trivia for a beach day. They remind us that the strip’s identity grew through places people returned to, remembered and told others about. A destination gets its character from those accumulated connections.

A boulevard named for a son of St James

Gloucester Avenue was renamed Jimmy Cliff Boulevard at a ceremony on 28 March 2019. Jamaica Information Service recorded the occasion, held at Old Hospital Park, with the reggae artist and actor in attendance. It was a recognition of a musician from St James whose work carried Jamaican culture to audiences far beyond the island.

The older name still appears in business addresses. Keep both in mind when searching for a location, and use the exact business entrance rather than a broad area label when arranging to meet someone.

The next chapter is at street level

The pleasure of a district guide is in connecting its parts: a beach stop, a meal, a shop, a conversation, somewhere to spend an evening. Its usefulness depends on getting the practical details right too.

Visit Hip Strip brings both together. The history gives the place depth; the guide helps you decide where to go next. Start with one thing you want to do, and leave enough space in the day for the rest of the strip to introduce itself.
